Traduttore, Traditore

project description found here

As major thoroughfares continually develop through the history of Rome, important monuments of the time become connected, leaving a forgotten middle ground in between.  During the reign of Pope Sixtus V, thoroughfares were formed as pilgrimage roads to connect the holy landmarks of the day.  Under the unified country of Italy, further thoroughfares were established to allow for new means of transportation and for the historical and contemporary landmarks of the day to be connected.

In this world, the historical center of Rome has embraced its identity as that of tourist site, a museum.  And consequently a proper form of circulation must be established.  The governmental figures have placed a revival of interests in thoroughfares, implementing cuts through the city in order to allocate for more direct routes to the historical import of Rome.  The governmental headquarters of police force, domestic protection, secret agencies and others have become new nodes for these thoroughfares to stem from and the few historical pieces kept for viewing on the outer edge of the historical center, specifically the church, have been allowed a pardon  from the new circulation implementations.

But still there remains a forgotten middle ground.  And now, even more so than in past examples, this left over space has been walled in, patched over and intentionally ignored and forgotten, left to adapt and live on their own.  What once were narrow streets filled with character, culture and clothes lines, have now become mega-blocks, the left over change after the divisions caused by governmental issued thoroughfare construction.  But what happens within these walls, what happens within these mega-blocks, within these cities?  The citizens of Rome, left to be forgotten, begin to adapt, begin to grow, and a new milieu is formed within these walls.
