openings.  through a forced connection with it’s opposite, an opening seems rather paradoxical.  what would an opening be without a wall in which it sits?  and yet, the light that fills the space set by the wall, is given through the opening.  how can one be aware of the wall without light to give it life?  only through a separation can there be a connection, where there is darkness there will be light.  similarly, there is a constant symbiotic and yet paradoxical relationship that exists between our orientation of the city of rome.  navigating or orienting oneself in or through a city often relates, perhaps even relies, on a two dimensional layout of the city.  with rome, however, it doesn’t seem to work the same way.  rome is navigated through the broken, fragmented views and glimpses of landmarks, allowing for a perceptual orientation of not simply direction, but of the city’s milieu.  never perceived as a whole, the landmarks make up the city of rome as if ceramic pieces in a mosaic.  never complete on it’s own, but only when brought together through the views of the person does the city become alive; become lived in.  as a wall is lit by the window; a map is built from the landmarks.  as a wall is only a construction, it is the framed  connection within it that calls attention to something other.
