Blog Question 13

In 15 weeks and counting, I have studied, explored and discovered new things about architecture and myself. In Rome, and mostly everywhere else, there is nothing to start from scratch, but to continue from something else.

I do not need to start but too continue – this brings a whole different perspective on architecture.

It is not my project but the project; it is neither his or her project but the project.

Before bringing something new to a site, find what is hidden in the site and unveil it to the world.

Other fields of studies such as philosophy, art, movies, or literature can benefit the architect.

These are only a few ideas that spark a new views on architecture. But to know and see architecture that can do more than just provide a place to inhabit has truly transfigured my understanding.

Yet I still have questions to answer; one of them is:

How can I use technology as a techne and not a technique? And what to do with it and teach it?

Blog Question 12

In a city, different types of jobs and activities make a city function. Everyone has a responsibility. It can be small or big, but everyone should do what they are required to do. For instance, waste should be taken out in order for those who are in charge to take it away. A waste management system will keep the city functioning. A city such as Rome, with set dates for specific type of waste has no problem cleaning the city; however, Naples has a huge waste problem, as trash continues to pile up upon the streets because there is no place left for trash to be taken to. The citizens have no proper place to put them but the streets. Not taking out the garbage can influence a place of any size – from a small home to a large city. If there is no waste management program in a city, such as Naples, it will slowly but surely deteriorate.

Blog Question 11

The Brion Tomb is a place that frames views. Carlo Scarpa frames views within and outside of the area. Walking to chapel in the corridor, a series of views frame a tree. While the walls of cemetery frames the sky and the background. The entrance frames the horizon beyond the wall. Inside the chapel, series of openings frame areas of the cemetery.

A particular view causes Scarpa to add a trip wire. It is installed to stop lookers from falling into the pool as they walk backwards to capture the view of the mountains and bell tower from a far behind the cemetery’s wall. It is the cause of the trip wire that explains the Tomb. Scarpa found views that are so breath taking around the site and expose them to visitors that a detail is needed to keep people from falling backwards.
