inside the tiber_outside of rome

the view from the edge of the tiber is much more than visual.  it is experiential.  one gains a perspective of rome that cannot be received anywhere else. it is dynamic.  the meandering path shifts one’s perspective with every step forced to look forward to see around the next bend, and forced to look up to catch a glimpse of the life above.
the river that runs through it is never the same.  it is a constant flow of movement, that drains the city, taking away all in its possession.
the feeling of being below over comes you.  the embankments supporting the river’s edge tuck away what runs through them.  the life that exists above is much different than that below.  the city above seems intangible, yet the noise of the trains and cars are still audible.  while walking along the river’s edge, one is aware of the life that scurries beyond, but is anyone aware of the life that is walking below?
the tiber river has historically brought much life to the city of rome.  it has served as a means of transportation, gathering, and food source.  markets use to surround the streets near the water’s edge, and people could drink it’s replenishing water.  years ago the tiber was a much larger part of rome.  today, it feels abandoned.
